Goshen: Small-Town Charm That Can’t Be Beat

The area that is now Goshen was first settled in 1739 and named after the Land of Goshen, a region in Egypt where the Israelites settled during their time there, particularly during Joseph’s time and prior to the Exodus.

While the town was largely agricultural in the 18th century, there were also firearms made there, which were used in the French-Indian War and later the American Revolution.

In the 1809, Goshen resident Lewis Norton, a farmer, was inspired by cheese his uncle brought back from Holland. He used that inspiration to invent and patent cheese shaped like a pineapple. Pineapple Cheese, as it was known, was made using first a pineapple-shaped mold, then nets to create the pineapple texture. His factory for making cheese was one of the first in the U.S. The cheese was a smash hit, becoming one of the most popular housewarming gifts through the mid-19th century.

Today’s Goshen still has a strong agricultural community with dairy farms, vineyards, and orchards. It is also known for its old-school New England charm and has many inns and restaurants.

The Goshen Fair, one of the state’s best agricultural fairs, draws thousands to town every Labor Day weekend. It features livestock, poultry, and crop judging, an antique tractor pull, concerts, a skillet-throwing contest, exhibits of giant vegetable and pumpkins, and an apple fritter-eating contest.
