Danbury: Rich in History with a Bright Future

Before European settlers arrived in what is now Danbury, the area was home to the Paugussett tribe. With the arrival of colonial settlers, Danbury became an important town in the colony of Connecticut, playing a notable role in the Revolutionary War. One significant event was the British raid in 1777, during which the town was set ablaze, resulting in the loss of homes, supplies, and morale for the colonists. Despite this, Danbury rebuilt and continued to grow.

During the 19th century, Danbury became renowned for its hat-making industry, supplying high-quality hats that were in demand across the country, earning it the nickname “Hat City.” At its peak, the town was home to dozens of hat factories, solidifying its reputation as a key industrial center.

Alongside its industrial growth, the community developed its cultural and social infrastructure, with parks, theaters, the growing Western Connecticut State University, and other institutions adding to its appeal. Today, Danbury is a vibrant hub of industry, commerce, education, and culture.
