Woodbury: History, Antiques, and More!

Before Europeans arrived, what is now Woodbury was home to the Pootatuck tribe, which was connected with the larger Paugussett people.

The first settlers arrived in two groups in 1673: a group led by Deacon Samuel Sherman, who had been given permission by the general court to purchase land from the local Native population, along with a group of religious dissidents from Stratford who had separated from the church there and were led by Reverend Zachariah Walker, who would become Woodbury’s first minister.

The new settlement was first known as Pomperaug Plantation, because of its location along the Pomperaug River, and was later named Woodbury, meaning “a dwelling place in the woods.”

After the Revolution, Woodbury became a center for agriculture-related commerce, thanks to its location on the Pomperaug River and its proximity to the Housatonic River. The town’s prosperity was evident in the wide array of artisans and tradespeople such as blacksmiths, joiners, wheelwrights, goldsmiths, tanners, tinsmiths, and clothiers.

Over the 20th century, Woodbury evolved from a rural, agricultural-based town to a more suburban community, known for its outstanding antiques stores and markets.

In popular culture, Woodbury was frequently a part of the Gilmore Girls world as a neighboring town of the show’s fictional Stars Hollow. It was mentioned multiple times, including an episode when the Festival of Living Art was moved from Woodbury to Stars Hollow because of flooding and in the 2016 “Year in the Life” reboot when Woodbury was chosen for a movie location shoot over Stars Hollow — to the ire of town selectman Taylor Doose.

Notable natives and residents of Woodbury include:

• Rob Zombie, Grammy-nominated metal singer and songwriter, frontman of the metal group White Zombie, and director of movies such as “House of 1000 Corpses” and the 2007 remake of the horror classics “Halloween” and the “Halloween II” sequel in 2009
• Malcolm Baldridge, former chairman and CEO of Waterbury-based brass company Scoville, Inc., who later served as Secretary of Commerce in the Reagan administration from 1981 until his death in 1987 at age 64 from injuries sustained in a rodeo accident
• LeRoy Anderson, composer of light orchestral music often performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra with his most famous piece being the holiday classic “Sleigh Ride”
• Robert Templeton, artist who painted portraits of presidents Jimmy Carter and Lyndon Johnson, along with First Lady Rosalynn Carter, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, baseball player Stan Musial, and created a collection of work related to the Civil Rights Movement including a portrait of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
• Kay Sage, a Surrealist artist and poet who was a princess of San Faustino during her marriage to Italian nobleman Ranieri Bourbon del Monte Santa Maria, Prince di San Faustino, later married fellow Surrealist artist Yves Tanguay and set up a home and studio in Woodbury together
