Problems With Your Oil Burner? PDF Print E-mail

Most modern oil heating equipment is extremely reliable. However, any mechanical device is subject to failure on occasion. In such a case, Mitchell's stands ready to assist with 24x7 service on-call. The number is (203) 744-0600.

Experience has shown that many problems are are relatively easy to correct quickly. Therefore, before you call, here is a list of simple things you can check. You might want to print a copy of this page and take it with you. As you go down the checklist, make a note of the results of each step. If the heating unit starts after any of the steps, you need not go any farther on the list. Even if you are not able to start your system, when you place your service call, you will be better equipped to answer your customer service representative's questions.

Here is the checklist:

1) Be sure that the oil burner switches are on. Its a mystery how these things get turned off but it happens with surprising frequency. There is normally one switch outside the furnace room and another on the heating unit itself.

2) Is the thermostat set above the current room temperature? The heating unit will not run if the thermostat is turned down.

3) Make sure that there is oil in the tank. If you have an indoor tank you will find the gauge on the top of the tank.

4) Check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. It may be labeled boiler, furnace, heat, etc. If you have circuit breaker for your heating unit, you can reset it by pushing it all the way to the off position and then pushing it all the way to the on position.

5) Press the reset button on the control box ONCE ONLY.

If the unit still hasn't started, please call (203) 744-0600 right away and your customer service representative will assist you.

Your Words

I wanted to personally thank you for your continued great service, and particularly for your last response

Just before we left on a trip, our drier died. I set up delivery of a new one for the day after we got back. Unfortunately I forgot that the gas connection had to be made and we discovered, when the drier arrived, that there was not a local shutoff valve.

So there I was with my wife with a pile of laundry, a new drier, no way to get it going, and saying "oh ----", I gotta call Mitchells and hope for a miracle. I think it was less than an hour when your crew arrived and took care of it.

That kind of service is so rare these days. I just wanted to make a point of thanking you and say that I hope I don't plan so poorly again. --Ridgefield Customer
